Home Builders Principles
You can foster positive communications in your marriage by using basic communications skills - expressing, listening, and responding.

1.  Read
Prov 16:16 and  Prov 24:3  Why is understand important in a good marriage relationship?

The First Component: Expressing
The desired outcome in communications is to have the person you are talking with to understand what you are saying, what you mean, and what you feel.  Therefore, the communicator must express themselves clearly in terms their recipient knows and understands.

2. Read James 3:3-12 What is dangerous about the tongue?

3.  Read James 3:3-12 What is good about the tongue?

4.   Read James 3:3-12 What is the danger in not expressing yourself clearly, openly and honestly?

The Second Component: Listening

The Third Component: Responding

Scripture on communications:
Prov 16:16
How much better to get wisdom than gold, to choose understanding rather than silver! NIV

Prov 24:3
By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; NIV

James 3:3-12
When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal.
4 Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go.
5 Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts.  Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.    6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body.  It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.
7 All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man,
8 but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness.
10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be.
11 Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?
12 My brothers, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs?  Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.NIV

Mathew Henry Comment  Proverbs 16:16, Pride and humility
Solomon here not only asserts that it is better to get wisdom than gold (Prov 3:14; 8:19), but he speaks it with assurance, that it is much better, better beyond expression-with admiration (How much better!) as one amazed at the disproportion-with an appeal to men's consciences ("Judge in yourselves how much better it is")-and with an addition to the same purport, that understanding is rather to be chosen than silver and all the treasures of kings and their favorites. Note,
1. Heavenly wisdom is better than worldly wealth, and to be preferred before it. Grace is more valuable than gold. Grace is the gift of God's peculiar favor; gold only of common providence. Grace is for ourselves; gold for others. Grace is for the soul and eternity; gold only for the body and time. Grace will stand us in stead in a dying hour, when gold will do us no good.
2. The getting of this heavenly wisdom is better than the getting of worldly wealth. Many take care and pains to get wealth, and yet come short of it; but grace was never denied to any that sincerely sought it. There is vanity and vexation of spirit in getting wealth, but joy and satisfaction of spirit in getting wisdom. Great peace have those that love it.
